First Nations artist Arthur Renwick was born in Kitimat, British Columbia, in 1965. He received his MFA in photography from Concordia University, Montreal, in 1993. Since graduating he has participated in several solo and group exhibitions at public museums and galleries, including The Musee du Quai Branly and the Canadian Cultural Centre, both in Paris, France, Gallery 44 in Toronto and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Renwick combines politically engaged subject matter with a contemporary aesthetic to create sophisticated, beautifully crafted works that address issues of identity. In 2005 he won the K.M. Hunter Artist Award. His work has recently been shown in Montreal and Toronto and will be exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum in New York in 2010. The twelve works of his 2006 Mask Series were purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in 2008. He is represented by the Katzman Kamen Gallery in Toronto, Canada. |
